Remembrance Sunday: Honouring the Sacrifices of Indian Allies 🌹🌼🇮🇳🪖
Remembrance Sunday holds a special significance, not only for Britons but also for Indians who bravely fought alongside them in the World Wars. Often serving on the front lines, Indian soldiers made unparalleled contributions to the Allied forces.
In fact, 1 in 6 British troops were Indian, forming the largest voluntary army in history, which was made up of 750k Hindus, 400k Muslims & 130k Sikhs in WW1.WW2 saw 1.25m Hindus, 800k Muslims & 400k Sikhs, standing shoulder to shoulder, as brothers, fighting the battle, sharing in this common ground. Amongst those would have been my great grandfather who earned an OBE for service as a British Medical doctor. The OBE I still have today, which I shall one day pass on to my children and grandchildren and tell them of the contributions our lineage has made to humanity.
Their sacrifices should not be forgotten. The saffron marigold, a symbol of remembrance for Indian allies, stands alongside the red poppy as a reminder of their valour. Let us honour the memory of all those who served, including the Indian soldiers who fought for the freedom we enjoy today. Their legacy reminds us that the whole world is one family, united in our shared humanity. 🕉️🪯🚩🪷
